The reason for today’s visit was to take a look at a septic pump circuit that kept tripping. When I arrived, I tested with Mr. Tim, who showed me the GFCI breaker in the main panel as well as the junction box for the septic circuit on the exterior of the home. I opened up the junction and found continuity between hot & ground, which indicated a short in the wiring. I then opened up the septic control box and detached the line side conductors from the terminal block inside, once removed from the control box, the circuit turned back on and held. There are no lock rings holding the conduit in the control box, and the conduits/knockouts on the inside had been heavily siliconed. I found evidence of major overheating radiating from the leftmost (center) conduit, which indicated that there had been enough heat damage to damage the wiring of these conductors as well as the control panel wiring. For this call, I came out to assess a circuit tripping when 120 V EV was plugged in with no load. The circuit was fed with an old GFCI breaker out to a non-weather resistant receptacle that was rusted, secured to a rusted out box missing knockouts and an old metal cover. I replaced the breaker with a standard 20A breaker, replaced the weatherproof box with proper knockouts and installed a Weather-Resistant Tamper-Resistant GFCI with an in use cover. I also suggested Whole Home Surge Protection be added to each main panel (2), as there is none currently and is required for today’s minimum safety standards. Install 3 company supplied smoke detectors in the downstairs bedrooms. Install a GFCI receptacle at the washing machine to add the correct GFCI protection. Called out today to perform annual maintenance assessment. Customer was interested in replacing old smoke detectors in the basement. While performing our assessment, we discovered that the washing machine did not have the proper GFCI protection, as well as devices throughout the home were backstabbed. Customer was aware of the backstabbed devices, and understands that these devices will eventually need to be replaced using the correct wiring methods. Customer agreed to replace the detectors and add the GFCI to the washing machine.

Today’s visit was for a smoke detector that would not stop beeping. The customer found it was a plug in carbon monoxide that was 15 years old. The unit has gone bad. The smoke detectors were newer and not the problem, but when we inspected the wiring we found black corrosion on them. We found out the basement had been flooded and gutted, but the wiring was under water. All of the wiring in the panel had that black corrosion as well. To remediate the wiring in the panel we would replace all of the corroded breakers, and cut back all of the wiring and reconnect them. To be safe we would also install surge protection and replace the doorbell transformer that is very corroded.
